Having had a few seizures in my schooling days I was tested lots and put on medication to control them. Thankfully they have worked and I’ve not had a noticeable seizure since.

As with all strong long term medication they come with their side effects as well as their benefits. However when I was told I had epilepsy as a teen, I distinctly remember thinking that I didn’t want it to have too much of a negative impact on my life. I wanted to carry on doing the things I love and discover everything else that I could. Being young, I couldn’t have done these things without the support of my family. My Mum especially. Instead of telling me I couldn’t do things , just to be on the safe side. She would come to every single swimming training session, galla and school trip and make sure I was safe. Pretty amazing really. I don’t remember how I felt about that at the time, but now as an adult I am unbelievably thankful that my parents encouraged me to be me and carry on doing the things I love and needed in my life.

Now as I just passed my 40th birthday, I am living on a barge on an island (probably everything someone with epilepsy shouldn’t do) and feel the effects of long term medication in my body daily. Now I am also using swimming as a therapy to help with the pains I get in my body. Cold water immersion naturally releases the same chemical as ibuprofen and since realising this I now swim in cold water at least every other day. Before this I used to take multiple pain killers every day! Now I don’t need to!

With regular exercise and cold water I am fitter, happier and more pain free than I have been for a long time.

Now more than ever I am seeking adventure and plan on doing so for as long as I am able. I urge you to do the same if you are able and willing.

The benefits of outdoor swimming are amazing! Being IN nature is a wonderful thing.
